Free bus and metro rides for the women of Delhi; patriarchy commands AAP's new policy

New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has announced free bus and metro rides for women all across the national capital. AAP claims that their mega project will ensure the safety of women. With tall claims accompanying the announcement, female commuters in Delhi are struggling to connect the dots of this scheme.

Under this project, women will not be required to pay fares while travelling by metro or buses run by the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC). The AAP claims that this policy will make public transport safer for its female commuters.

Everyday, several female commuters have to fight their way in to the buses only to feel harassed by the end of the day. The DTC buses have borne testimony to several cases of harassment and molestation. However, the government's new claim of making them safer seems to be a facade.

Coronavirus: India lockdown extended for two more weeks

The national coronavirus lockdown in India has been extended beyond 4 May for another two weeks. New guidelines, outlined on Friday, update the country's designated red, green and orange zoning system. Red zones are considered hotspots, while considerable relaxations will be permitted in areas considered less dangerous. India has been under lockdown measures since 24 March, with more than 35,000 cases confirmed nationally. A new home ministry statement, outlining the extension until 18 May, said there had been "significant gains in the Covid-19 situation". But Friday saw a record number of new cases added to the nation's official tally. At least 1,100 are known to have died from the virus in India, but many believe the true number of infections and deaths is far higher than what has been reported.

He clarified that a quote about the impact of novel coronavirus on the profitability of businesses which had been attributed to him was, in fact, not said by him. I will endeavour to call out fake news whenever I can, but would encourage you to always verify news sources." Sharing the quote in the tweet, the 82-year-old philanthropist wrote, "My picture alongside a quote does not guarantee me having said it, a problem that many people face."
